Mikisew Commercial Trust
Overview of MCT (Mikisew Commercial Trust)
MCT was originally established for legal purposes in addition to coordinating resources required to manage the companies. The MCT board provides Chief and Council progress reports, which allows them more time to focus on governance and other areas of community development. When the board meets, the overall financial position of each company is reviewed and problem areas are deliberated. Acquisitions and opportunities are discussed along with the occasional prospect to connect with the community (community functions such as awards and recognition dinners, meeting with partners…etc).
The MCT Board is made up of all community members and each person was carefully selected to ensure the best possible representation for all members. Board members range in age (to represent the youth and Elders), expertise (Entrepreneurs, former Council members, Government representatives…etc) and geographic location (members from Mikisew e.g. Fort Chipewyan, Fort Smith, Fort McMurray and Edmonton). The diversity of the board can make decision making more time consuming especially on issues without clear objectives. When the Board reaches a decision, the discussion items have been constructively debated until a consensus is met. Careful consideration for any project/proposal must have the reaction from the community, long-term benefits, and opportunities for community development in addition to the business implications.
